LAFANG is honoured, once again, to host another edition of the Lasang Pinoy Food Blogging Event: Lasang Pinoy 15: Recycled, Reloaded!
In the Philippines, when you get replies of “panga” or “pangat” to your question of what’s on the table for lunch, dinner, or merienda, it only means one thing: recycled leftover food!
What does “panga” or “pangat” mean?
Pinoys, have always been known to play around with language [both English and Tagalog] and come up with the most creative hilarious words, phrases, and expressions to use and relate to a multitude of things in their daily lives.
“Panga” comes from the Tagalog “pangalawa,” literally second or twice. When talking about food, this would mean that the food has been reheated or recycled twice! “Pangat” comes from the Tagalog “pangatlo,” third or thrice – thrice reheated/recycled! The latter is often confused [for those who lack humour] with a native Pinoy delicacy called “pangat” or “pinangat” which is not the case here.
Pinoys’ [or Filipinos’] passion for food more often than not ends up with cooking more than what is required — with leftovers finding their way into freezers. And as conscientious as we Pinoys always are, these leftovers become creative and delectable culinary delights when whipped-up differently from how they were originally cooked.
In our culture, leftovers also come from and far beyond our own kitchens: from the simple “salu-salo” [meal gathering] in other homes, occasions like birthdays and anniversaries, restaurant-hoppings, to the grand fiestas that have always been part of our cultural heritage. Filipinos simply love the “take-home” or “take-away” treats found in leftovers. And often, in most family gatherings, one starts filling up take-away packs even before the fare-laden table gets devoured! Typical Pinoy.
Leftovers then make their re-appearances on the table [or packed lunch boxes!] in a multitude of situations: either when one is economically-challenged, or having lazy bones to think and cook something from scratch, or at times when a calamity [like the recent typhoon Milenyo] hits the country.
For this round, we challenge you to whip-up specialties recycled from a dish you cooked for dinner a few nights ago, or a take-away from the restaurant or a neighbourhood fiesta. The choice is yours. Just recycle!
Who may participate?
All Filipino food bloggers are highly-encouraged to join the event, be they in the country or abroad.
Non-food bloggers of Filipino ancestry are also invited; no matter how many generations they have been out of the country or who have never been to the Philippines but still identify themselves as Filipino [or part Filipino, married or related to Filipinos].
Entries from other Filipino food and culture enthusiasts are very much welcome.
Non-bloggers may also join as long as their entries are hosted in any blog.
How to participate?
All entries must be submitted by 10th November 2006 at 7:30 pm, Manila time. A round-up will be published shortly after.
For entries [or further quieries], you may send an email to lafang@mikemina.com or to lasang.pinoy@gmail.com with your name, address, the name of your blog, and the permalink to your entry.
You may also post it via the comment section of this post. For non-bloggers, you can email your article and photo, if you have, with the same particulars. We would be more than happy to host it in one of the sites.
Please indicate in the subject field Lasang Pinoy 15 [’Entry’ or ‘Query’] for all correspondence to facilitate identification.
Please also include this tag Lasang Pinoy 15 at the end of your post, to ping Technocrati.
By the way, I’d like to mention/remind the important fact that Lasang Pinoy was created to promote Filipino food! Therefore, as a challenge to everyone, I would love for those of you who have never tried Pinoy food before, to maybe try one of the recipes that I’ve already posted here, or visit one of the Filipino food bloggers site listed here, and here, and here too, find a recipe you like, play around and have a ball with it!
